Tōtara Reserve is one of the best and most accessible remaining examples of the ancient native forest that once covered much of the region. The reserve offers a gentle introduction to nature and a safe way of experiencing 'wild' New Zealand. There are a good variety of long and short bush walks within the reserve, which is also a popular camping and picnic spot, with plenty of facilities available.
Camping:
There are two camping grounds in Tōtara Reserve, the larger Kererū site which is adjacent to Camp Rangi Woods and the smaller Kahikatea site across the road. Amenities on site include toilets, hot showers, drinking water, electric BBQs, an adventure playground, powered and non-powered tent sites, 12 caravan sites and easy river access for swimming or fishing. There are toilet and shower facilities with wheelchair access at both camp sites. The camp grounds are open from Labour Weekend through to Easter Weekend. For fees and to book your stay, please visit the Tōtara Reserve Regional Park website.
