Whātonga was one of three recognised Chiefs on board the Kurahaupo Waka, which journeyed across the Pacific Ocean to Aotearoa, New Zealand. The artwork and story of Whātonga can be seen at the peak of Te Āpiti – Manawatū Gorge Tawa Loop track.
